Hi everyone, it's Sheyda :) So today near the beginning of class, we learned a cool breathing exercise to help calm your mind and body. It could even be used as a form of meditation. Start with closing your eyes. Then, try just listening to the sounds around you. It is important to close your eyes so there is no distraction in the process. We also discussed about how these sort of meditations methods can really help people with anxiety. When you have anxiety, you should not run away from your 'fear'. You should instead use these calming methods to help you get over your anxiety. We also went through the process of uploading answers for our weekly POWs. If someone has already uploaded your answer using the method you chose, do not re-upload it (HINT : the sooner in the week you solve and upload your answer, the less likely it is that someone else has already done so). If, however, you have the same answer but different method of solving the problem, feel free to upload it. If you got a different answer, upload that as well. REMEMBER : your method of solving must be easy to follow and logical! You may work individually or in pairs (same pair every time). Now, MATH! We started out by playing Algebra Ninja. Today, we were trying to rearrange an equation using numbers and symbols. While doing so, we discovered an amazing concept. When trying to solve an equation, you would use BEDMAS. When you are trying to solve for an variable or you are rearranging the equation to solve for a specific variable, you would use SAMDEB (BEDMAS reversed). You might have heard, what you do to one side, you must to the other. Yes, you need that when solving for a variable. You must also keep in mind when moving a number/variable from one side of the equal sign to another, you must switch the sign. Addition becomes Subtraction Multiplication becomes Division Numbers Squared become Square Roots Subtraction becomes Addition Division becomes Multiplication Square Roots become Numbers Squared (a = 3 ; y = 6) 2a + 3y = ? ↓ 2(3) + 3(6) = ? ↓ 6 + 18 = 24 *solving the equation above is done using BEDMAS and subtitution* In the following equation, we want to solve for 4 (isolate 4) : 24 = 9 x 4 -12 ↓ 36 = 9 x 4 ↓ 36 / 9 = 4 ↓ 4 = 4 *solving for 4 in the equation above is done using SAMDEB* Another big idea we talked about was NOT plugging in the brackets into a calculator (unless absolutely needed)! After Algebra Ninja, we continued our notes from Tuesday (section 'Substitution into Formulae'). For solving these equations, we first rearranged the equation for the desired variable, then we plugged in our numbers, and solved the equation. (ANSWERS : a) = 95.5 ; b) = 4.8 ) When needed to round an answer, such as the the examples in our notes, it is wise to write the answer not rounded, then rewrite the answer rounded. The numbers in the not rounded answer that will not appear (or that have to be rounded) in the final answer should be underlined. Example : Question b) r = √(72 / π) = 4.787 r = 4.8 When inputting the numbers into an equation, indicate your steps in order using numbers. #1 : Formula #2 : Substitution #3 : Rounded Answer (with units) Example : Question b) a = 72 #1 #2 #3 r = √(a / π) r = √(72 / π) r = 4.8 (units) **when solving an equation with π, do not use 3.14 ! Use the π symbol on your calculator. Points will be deducted if you use 3.14** HOMEWORK FOR TONIGHT : Skills Review Sheet (#11 a,c,e & #12 a,c,e) *If you have any questions about the homework, hang tight! Tomorrow in class, we will go over any questions you might have had regarding the homework. If you get a question wrong, don't erase it. Instead rewrite it correctly so you can see where you went wrong* Here is a little short clip demonstrating how to rearrange a formula to solve for a specific variable with examples and even practice questions. We got a mini lesson on how to use this very website you're reading on now, our blog. I'm sure someone could give you a crash course if you missed it, it's SUPERDIDUPERDIDUPER easy!! :) We also learned about the Problem Of the Week. This is a little math question sent out from Waterloo University once weekly. They will be posted on this blog up there^^(look for POW) Kain, Feenie and Megan v.C. are mediators. aaaaaAAAAALSOOOOOOoooooOOOoooOOO *if you sing that it's way more fun* we got our assigned questions sheet for the rest of the year, almost every day we will have about three questions to do from worksheets or the textbook. Tonight it's question #1 #9 and #10 from the worksheets given out, but for numbers 9 and 10 it is only necessary to do every other letter:) WE also did a tiny bit of review on rounding decimals and normal numbers, 2 worksheets were given out. We then had work time for these questions for the rest of class. Don't forget a calculator tomorrow!!!
